The significance of this milestone in terms of wilderness preservation and cross-border cooperation is in many ways unmatched and has the distinction of occurring on both sides of the border (Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Ontario), in the very heart of the continent.
This was celebrated in many ways individually by Quetico Park, Superior National Forest, Voyageurs National Park, the Quetico Foundation and other organizations who valued this commemorative anniversary, as well as collectively under the Heart of the Continent Partnership.
The Quetico Foundation celebrated this significant anniversary in a number of ways including holding our Annual General Meeting in Quetico Park in conjunction with Atikokan’s Canada Day celebrations including the Canada Day Centennial Canoe Parade, the launch of ‘Canoe the Heart’, and Quetico Park’s reunion. Our Annual Dinner in Toronto in October took on an historical theme in commemoration of the centennial. And throughout the year the Foundation supported a variety of local and commemorative celebratory initiatives including the McGuffin centennial book, “Quetico - Into the Wild.”
As well, the Foundation’s leadership was instrumental in the tremendous success of the ‘Canoe the Heart‘ initiative, a two week long journey involving dignitaries and representatives from Canadian and American organizations involved in the Heart of the Continent Partnership, circumnavigating the Quetico-Superior region in a voyageur canoe!
We look forward to ensuring the preservation of the Quetico-Superior wilderness for another 100 years!
