The Quetico Foundation - Established 1954
Quetico Provincial Park Annotated Satellite Map Legend

The Quetico Foundation will pique the interest of many backcountry travellers with their new map of Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. The map represents an intriguing application of satellite imagery to practital, routefinding cartography.
The core map is an 86 x 112 cm multi- colour projection of the entire park (4,758 sq km) on glossy paper. This sheet has the unmistakable look of a satellite photo, and it is a beauty. The forested areas are represented in multiple shades of green, open water is light blue, and the park baundaries are set in yellow and red. The map's three-dimensional quality makes plain that this is rugged shield country etched by glaciers. The reverse side of the map has useful text on Quetico that sets a standard for literacy and relevance.

Description

As part of its mandate to promote Quetico Provincial Park and with the cooperation of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, The Quetico Foundation has published completely new satellite maps of the park and its canoe routes in 1999. The new maps are sensational, both visually and technically. A large map of the entire park is available along with separate, smaller maps of each of the four quadrants of the park.

  • The large map is 86 cm x 112 cm. (34” x 44”) and is being sold unfolded making it ideal for framing. The map is printed in full colour on glossy stock with a detailed history and information about the park on the reverse. This map provides an extraordinary picture of the entire park and will be a collector’s item. The retail price is C$19.95 (US$19.95).
  • The quadrant maps are printed in full colour on uncoated paper specifically for canoeists. At 56 cm x 86 cm. (22” x 34”), they fit in all conventional map cases and are extremely detailed and legible in low light conditions. They may be joined together or used separately. On one side of each is a satellite map (1:50,000) of one quadrant of the Park, and there is a conventional map (1:150,000) of the entire park on the reverse side of each. They are being offered at a retail price of C$5.95 (US$5.95) each.

The map information was prepared using a 3-band Thematic Mapper Image captured by a LANDSAT satellite, and using digital Ontario Base Maps supplied by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The material was manipulated using an ARC/INFO Geographic Information System (GIS) and EASIPace software by members of the Faculty of Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo. All portages and hazards (e.g. rapids and waterfalls) have been painstakingly superimposed on the maps in an effort to be as accurate as possible.
