Satellite Canoe Route Maps Project

The Foundation, together with the Ministry of Natural Resources, has published several maps of Quetico Park over the years. In 1999, the Foundation and the M.N.R. brought out a new type of map series, based on satellite images of the Park. Sales of the map help to support the work of the Foundation. (Click here to find out more about the Satellite Maps of the Park.)

Educational Bursaries

In 1991, the Foundation established bursaries in memory of the late Quetico Park Naturalist, Shan Walshe. The awards are made to a graduating student from the Atikokan and/or the Lac La Croix high schools. The students must be accepted at a post secondary education school for studies in environmental, biological or related disciplines and have demonstrated leadership qualities.

Tall Pines Project

Tall Pines Project For several years, the Foundation has funded a Tall Pines Program in conjunction with the Ministry of Natural Resources. Fire suppression, earlier logging and white pine blister rust have greatly reduced the natural white pine stands in the Park. The program involves the collection of seed from genetically superior, blister-rust-resistant pines in the Quetico area and the planting of 4,200 seedlings in seed orchards and 14 experimental sites. Survival rates have generally been excellent and one of the seedlings recently produced the first cone. In celebration of its 100th birthday in 1999, the Town of Atikokan planted over 9,000 of these seedlings in and around the town.

Public Advocacy

The Foundation participates in public processes in an effort to protect the environment generally and particularly to conserve the natural treasure that is Quetico Park. The Foundation was part of the campaign to convince the provincial government to dedicate a large proportion of the province's Crown lands as wilderness areas (the Lands for Life Process). On a more local level, the Foundation often meets with stakeholders in and around the Park to discuss the issues of relevance to the Park's environment.

ROM Watercolour Sketches

The Foundation arranged the donation of a fine collection of watercolour sketches of Indian rock paintings to the Royal Ontario Museum.
